Concussions/DizzinessCONCUSSIONS Concussions are defined as "shaking of the brain, resulting from impact, resulting in malfunction of brain cells and transient brain function disorders."
The diagnosis of concussion must be made by a qualified health professional. However, some common symptoms can be identified by the person suffering from concussion. (See the following infographic)
The vestibular system is a barosensitive sensory organ (pressure), located in the inner ear, which contributes to the sensation of movement and balance. It consists of a peripheral sensory organ composed of the posterior labyrinth (semicircular canals, utricle and saccule), the vestibulocochlear nerve and its encephalic nuclei. Several problems and diseases arise from the vestibular system. A thorough medical evaluation is often necessary to make the diagnosis. Some conditions are easily and quickly treated while others can leave permanent damages. Benign Positional Paroxysmal Vertigo (BPPV) is the most common cause of vertigo. BPPV, or vertigo of position, is a form of dizziness that is intermittent and short-lived (less than a minute) and is always on the same side. The person feels that the room is spinning around them.
